It's no secret that websites with high domain authority (DA) rank better with search engines like Google. But what if you are just starting out with a low DA website? Well, you will learn how to find websites with low domain authority.

I call them gateway websites! And then you need to create a better version with strong content and more. For that you can follow the free SEO checklist.

Authority Metrics: DA, PA, DR, CF, PageRank of a website.

Search engines like Google rank web pages based on the quality of their content. Since there are billions of web pages on the Internet, Google must use a variety of factors to rank them. One of these factors is PageRank, which was invented in 1998.

Google's PageRank is a link analysis algorithm that uses links to web pages as votes. This is used to measure the importance or authority of web pages.

Google PageRank:

The more important a website is, the more links it receives from other websites. However, many other factors are also taken into account. Today's PageRank is much more complex and sophisticated.

Google is now working on something even more significant. That's why they let PageRank patents expire in 2019. But the industry was ready to adopt new link building and authority metrics.

These are Domain Authority (DA), Page Authority (PA), TrustRank (TR), Citation Flow (CF) and Domain Rating (DR). They are not influenced or approved by Google's updates. And they mainly use links as a ranking factor.

You can use any of these metrics to measure the authority of a website.

Moz Domain Authority (DA) & Page Authority (PA) of a website.

Domain Authority is a search engine ranking value developed by Moz that predicts how well a website will rank in SERPs.

A Domain Authority score ranges from one to 100, with higher scores corresponding to a remarkable ability to rank. Page Authority (PA) is a score developed by Moz that predicts the performance of a particular page.

DA and PA are part of Moz's Link Explorer tool. However, you can also check them by installing a Moz Bar. I'll help you do that later in this article. Now let us focus on the metrics used in the SEO industry today.

Ahrefs Domain Rating (DR)

Domain Rating (DR) is a metric developed by Ahrefs. It predicts how strong a website is in terms of backlinks. An Ahrefs DR score ranges from one to 100, with higher scores corresponding to greater ability to rank.

Majestic TrustFlow (TF) & CitationFlow (CF) of a website.

Trust Flow (TF) is an indicator from Majestic that analyzes and displays the trustworthiness of a website based on its quality. Citation Flow (CF) is a metric that measures the number of links on a website without considering their quality.

As you can see, these metrics are not 100% accurate. Watch Ken Mcgaffin explain TF and CF of a website in this video:

But it is still useful to measure the authority of a website. You can use these metrics to find low domain authority websites that you can rank quickly on Google!

How do websites with low domain authority compete?

You need to be very strategic if you have a low DA website, because it's not easy to compete with high authority websites in your industry.

The low DA websites can compete with other low DA websites.

Does that make sense? Yes, of course.

And then you can gradually build up the authority of your website by using white hat SEO methods. This will help you rank better on Google and other search engines.

Why is finding low DA websites important for you?

Google does not reveal all of its ranking factors. Although links are one of the most important ranking signals, there are many other factors.

So if a low DA website is ranking for keywords you want to rank for, it means it has something else to enjoy ranking for. And it also means that your website with a low DA can focus on these factors.

You just need to be better than your competitors! And that's not hard if you offer more value and a better user experience.

How to find low domain authority websites in your niche?

In this 6-step process, you can quickly find low DA websites in your niche so you can target the same keywords they rank for.

I'll show you how to do this quickly and clearly, and give you my essential criteria so you can create a working plan.

1/ Install the Moz-Bar extension in Chrome and pin it.

First, you need to install the MozBar extension in your Google Chrome browser.

Here is how:

Go to the Google Chrome Web Store.
Search for "Moz" under "Extensions".
And click the "Add to Chrome" button.

Then click on the three dots in the upper right corner of your browser. Go to "More tools" and then to "Extensions." Find MozBar and click the pin icon to pin MozBar to your browser. Easy as pie!

2/ Log in to your free Moz account or create a new one.

If you do not have a Moz account yet, you can create one here. Signing up is free and only takes less than a minute. After that, log in to your Moz account. Make sure the MozBar icon displays the brand color indicating you are ready.

3/ Start with the keyword research.

Enter any keyword related to your niche into the free H-Supertools Keyword Research Tool. It will quickly spit out all the terms related to your starting keyword. For example, I searched for "hiking for beginners" on H-Supertools.

And it showed that the difficulty level in ranking for this keyword is medium. But it also showed other keywords with low difficulty. One of them was "safety tips for beginners hiking".

Now it's time to check the domain authority of the website ranking for this keyword.

4/ Check the domain authority of the top 10 ranked websites.

Checking DA of the websites ranking in the SERPs is quite easy with MozBar. You just need to search for your keyword on Google. Then look at the small bar under the meta tag of each website. It will show you the DA & PA of that website.

5/ Set your criteria for keyword searches.

You need a set of criteria to find websites with low DA and keywords with low KD (Keyword Difficulty). This will help you save time and energy when you search for new keywords later.

Here are my basic criteria

  • The keyword difficulty should be low in the H-Supertools Keyword Research Tool.
  • The monthly search volume should be 500 or more.
  • And DA for the websites ranking for these keywords should be less than 30.

Or the DA of these websites should be equal or less than the DA of your website.

Of course, you can set your own criteria. But make sure they are realistic so you do not miss great keyword opportunities.

6/ Collect other low competition keywords with low PA and DA pages.

Make a list of all the keywords you want to target. Then start googling these keywords one by one. Take note of the sites with less than 30 or 20 DA, which are at the top. Then create a filtered list of keywords.

Repeat the process and prioritize keywords with low DA & PA pages. This way you can quickly find the right keywords and achieve a fast ranking on Google.

7/ Create better content to rank quickly on Google.

Links are undoubtedly an important ranking factor. However, if you do not want to invest effort in manual link building, you can still rank with quality content.

If you find websites with low domain authority and create content that targets them, you'll quickly see positive results.

What makes high-quality content?

Content is high-quality if it is readable, engaging, and provides unique insights to readers. It should also be optimized for search engines like Google.

  • A. Readable and engaging

Your content should be readable and captivating enough to keep your readers engaged until the end.

  • B. Thorough Research & Unique Insights

It should add value to your readers by teaching them something new or helping them solve their problems.

  • C. Well optimized for rankings

Your content should be well optimized for the target keyword. But do not stuff the keywords unnaturally in your content. Use H2 & H3 headings and bullet points to organize your content and make it easy to read.

Use relevant keywords in your post to signal to Google that your content is relevant to that keyword.

In addition to quality, you should also focus on quantity. You need to write blog posts quickly to find more keywords to increase your site's authority and traffic. That's it for this section.

Coming back to domain authority, you can check the DA of any website with MozBar. However, there are also many other tools for checking website authority. Let us get to know them now.

FAQs about domain authority or domain rating of websites (2022).

Time for some FAQs about domain authority or domain rating of websites.

1/ How is the domain authority of a website (DA) calculated?

Moz's DA is calculated based on several factors including linking domains and total number of backlinks. It is a logarithmic value from 0-100 that is used to track the ranking strength of a website over time. Read more about Moz DA here.

2/ What is a good domain authority?

Domain authority is relative. A site with DA 30 may be considered appropriate in one niche, while a site with DA 50 in another. But a DA of 50 and above is considered good when we talk about general niches.

And a website with DA of 60 and above is considered very good. Of course, the higher the better. But if you are looking for a good DA page to target, you need to collect less than 30 or 20 DA pages to get fast results.

3/ How to increase the Domain Authority of a website?

You can increase the DA of your website by improving the quality and quantity of your content, acquiring quality backlinks from other websites and optimizing your website for search engines. You can also increase the DA of SaaS and other types of websites.

4/ Can small websites with low domain authority outrank big websites?

Small websites with low DA can outrank large websites with high DA by producing better content than gateway websites. The gateway sites are the low DA sites that rank for keywords in your niche. Therefore, you need to find low domain authority websites as soon as possible!

5/ Do big websites dominate Google search results?

It is undeniable that big websites dominate Google search results. But that does not mean that small websites can not outrank them. With the right SEO strategy, any website can rank high on Google, regardless of its size or DA.

All you need to do is focus on creating better content than your competitors. And remember that your competitors are a little ahead of you, not far ahead.

6/ What is the difference between DR and DA of a website?

A Domain Rating (DR) metric is used by Ahrefs to calculate the strength of a website's backlink profile. It is similar to DA, but not the same.

DA is a metric used by Moz to determine the ranking strength of a website. It is based on many factors, including linking domains and a total number of backlinks.

7/ Can the Moz domain authority go down?

Yes, Moz domain authority can decrease. Your DA score can decrease if you get many low quality backlinks or lose some high quality backlinks. Also, it can change due to the updates of Moz DA algorithm.

8/ How to check the Domain Authority of a website?

You can check the Domain Authority of a website using MozBar (a free Google Chrome extension). You can also use other tools to check website authority such as Ahrefs, Majestic and SEO Analyzer.
